The strong Black Woman: Is this the only label we wear?

Which one do you wear?

The strong black woman is always talked about, written about, praised – yes I love to hear us described this way. What happens when we don’t feel strong? Do we paint a smile on our faces and just carry on or admit we don’t feel strong? Don’t we deserve to be seen in other ways too? But I know from some things I’ve been through and seeing how the world treats us black women; sometimes it’s hard to strong. I’ve had times where I just don’t want to be strong.

I sometimes feel like we are so busy being strong and living up to this label that there is no room for other sides to us.

Thanking our Foremothers for the strength

Yes we had to be strong during slavery; having no freedom, rape, molestation, being used for reproduction and nothing more. This meant that a black woman owned only her strength. Not her body, her time, her space – just her strength.

I am so glad to come from a long line of these strong black women, who somehow managed to keep standing – when life kept on trying to knock them down.

Don’t be limited by the strong black woman label

For most of us now, our lives have exceeded those of our mothers – how we work, the choices we can make and the lifestyles we lead. I feel like modern black women are not content to wear the ‘strong’ label only. There is a new honesty we are reaching for – something that will tell the truth about us, the real story about who we are.

But we are more than the strong label – intelligent, beautiful, trailblazers, community leaders and more. Our feelings, thoughts and creativity are showing us to be more than strong – thoughtful, vulnerable, soft, humorous. I know you can fill in the gaps with alot more…

No I don’t want us to put down our strength. I thank God we have it but don’t let this world stop you from being and showing all the other sides to you – especially your unique gifts and talents.

So I’ll end this Blog by starting off your list and I’m telling you to keep on adding to it-
Courageous, Beautiful, Intelligent, Strong, Vulnerable……. yes you know who you really are….
