The lessons I learned about Black women & creating Joy

I recently held an Online Meetup about How us Black Women can create Joy during tough times. It was a truly uplifting event. I was able to share my thoughts and listen to other women in the Afrowoman Online Community share their experiences. One thing that is the clearest to me is that Joy is a journey.
Joy has to be grown and developed in a personal way
For us Black women, we need a unique type of Joy. The pressures from the world, including racism, sexism, barriers in the workplace and economic pressures. This is alot to deal with all the time! The Western world’s definition of Joy doesn’t and won’t always work for us.

Yes we also can do meditation, take a bubble bath and go for a walk. I love all of these things. But when the world has it’s ‘foot on your neck’ and you’re struggling to hold onto your peace – these mainstream types of Joy may not work for us. Sometimes they won’t sustain a Black woman’s spirit.
Don’t leave your Joy to chance – Be proactive about it
This leads me to my next point – we can and must make Joy a priority in our lives, in our way. We have to be proactive about it. Whether that’s daily, weekly or every minute that you breathe. Think about how you think and speak. Your actions and the people you spend time with. These are all opportunities for you to create Joy.
